New York City’s media and entertainment industry is quite popular at home and abroad. And rightly so. It houses the largest publishing companies, the most filmed location in the world, renowned newspapers, and advertising agencies. The city is also the biggest market for radio and television content.
From statistics dated 2014, New York was termed the world’s media capital. The report compared NY’s media content to several media and entertainment industries in various capitals around the world. New York had estimated spending of $19.7 billion in that year, placing it above the then top media industry, Tokyo. New York City had a major role to play in that statistic. Here’s how.
The Media Profile
The Film and Television Industry
Over the years, the film and television industry in NYC has developed so much. It is now a prominent hot-spot for American entertainment. More so, it has evolved to claim a major stake in the city’s economy. The city itself has served as a filming location for several television series and movies. Nonetheless, it has also been used as a storyline in many books and other media creations. In 2012, NYC media amassed the status of “…second-largest center for filmmaking and television production in the United States."
About two hundred films being produced yearly led to the employment of more than 100,000 people. In 2015 alone, the film entertainment industry garnered about $9 billion.
Prominent media companies, (both local and international) have their headquarters in the city. The list ranges from cable distributors, national broadcast networks, local TV stations, cable networks, to film studio companies. Some famous examples are Sony, Fox Corporation, AMC Networks, Disney, Viacom, Warner Media, Food Network, and NBC Universal.
The Music Industry
The Music vibe in New York City is second to none. No wonder it has such major impacts on the city’s finances. Home to popular genres of music such as blues and R&B, NYC’s music scene bubbles with life; and is immensely diverse in art. In addition to having popular music labels and companies headquartered in the city, important musical theaters are also centered there. The Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Jazz Foundation of America, and the New York City Ballet are major music institutions and venues with iconic status in the world.
In 2015, Mayor Menin, director of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment revealed the economic impact of the industry. It had produced 60,000 music-related jobs in the state and an overall economic output of $21 billion.
The club scene in New York is a major boost. Several stars launched their careers through NYC’s ‘’club life”. Frank Sinatra is a notable example.
Currently, there are about 72 digital music companies in the city including Spotify and Sound Cloud.
The News and Journalism Industry
A good number of top-notch news companies make up the journalism community of New York City. Four of the United States’ most reputable papers have sites in New York City—the New York Times, the Daily News, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post. Additionally, the city boasts of more than forty other dailies and tabloids.
Also, there are several publications suited to the ethnicity of different citizens. An example is the Jewish-Daily Forward, a newspaper founded in 1897 tailored specifically for a Jewish-American audience. The paper, published in both Yiddish and English versions, covers affairs, perceptions, and institutions relating to its target audience.
Another major ethnic publication is the African-American newspapers spearheaded by the African-American press. Additional dailies are published in Chinese, Greek, Korean, and Spanish to serve the diverse communities represented in the state. Such ethnic variations are a strong measure of the diverse nature of the journalism industry.
Online Entertainment
Digital companies often take advantage of the constantly changing world of digital media. Releasing trends that directly connect with people at a price. Some of the finest digital producers in the world have their locations in New York City. Including content producers and software companies. The list runs wide, but notable mentions include Vimeo, Snap, Newsela, BuzzFeed, Refinery29, Gimlet Media, Dailymotion, and theSkimm.
The Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME)
At the forefront of New York’s media is the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME). The agency supports the thriving creative economy in the city and makes it entirely accessible. The agency comprises four divisions:
- The Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting responsible for organizing film and television production across the five boroughs;
- NYC Media, the largest metropolitan radio and television broadcasting body in the country;
- Workforce and educational initiatives that support the growth of NYC’s creative industries;
- The Office of Nightlife, which supports the sustainable development of New York City’s nightlife industry, and accounts for close to 300,000 jobs and an economic output of $35.1 billion.
