The Bronx, formed in 1912, is one of the five boroughs in New York City. Except for a tiny piece of Manhattan, the Bronx is the only part of New York situated on the mainland. The borough is bordered by the Hudson River at the west, the East River at the south, the Long Island Sound at the east, and Westchester County in the north.
History
The region we now know as the Bronx was first a rural settlement for farmers and hunters. Then, European forces broke through ̶ precisely in 1639. In no time, merchants and wealthy politicians began building summer houses there. The advent of commerce, bridges, and railroads contributed to the development of the Bronx. Three towns, borne out of the Westchester County, were annexed to New York around 1874. These towns—Kingsbridge, West Farms, and Morrisania—were abolished shortly after.
The town of Westchester in 1894, had voted against being annexed but was “dragged along” nonetheless to create the Bronx. In 1912, parts of New York County annexed from Westchester County were incorporated as Bronx County. Making the Bronx the last and 62nd county established by the New York state; effective 1914.
Demography
The borough is the third most populated county in the US, with a population of over 1.5 million people. The total land area covered by the Bronx is 150 square kilometers. Of which 27% is water (39 square kilometers) and 73% land (110 square kilometers).
The Bronx county had been racially diverse ever since its establishment. And it hasn’t changed. According to estimates put together by the Census Bureau in 2018, the Bronx remains the most diverse area in the country. A larger population of the residents are Hispanic or Latino (56.4%), then Whites (44.9%), followed by the Blacks or African-Americans (43.6%), then Non-Hispanics (9.1%), and finally Asians (4.5%).
Top Attractions
Back in the twentieth century, The Bronx was formally regarded as the fore center of gang activities and illegal immigrants. The streets were poverty-stricken and the neighborhoods were mere shadows and unpleasurable. In recent years, there has been a turnaround in the county with significant developments.
The county is presently one of the trendiest areas in NYC. Four major areas pull crowds from far and near. These areas include:
Bronx Zoo
Spanning over 265 acres of land and natural habitat, the Bronx Zoo deserves the award of the largest zoo in the United States. The zoo boasts of more than six thousand animals with species from places around the world. To top the wildlife experience, the zoo offers entry into places like Butterfly Gardens and a Children Zoo. Also, the Bronx Zoo dons a 4-D theatre, a large dining café, and seasonal camel rides.
Yankee Stadium
The Yankee Stadium, in Concourse, stands as one of the iconic landmarks in the Bronx and New York at large. The magnificent stadium, constructed in 1923 and renovated in 1976, is the largest host for baseball games. It seats an approximate number of fifty-two thousand people.
New York Botanical Gardens
The largest botanical gardens in New York City, and arguably in America, is located in the Bronx. The garden houses as many as a million species of plants. These plants range across many varieties such as aquatic plants, carnivorous plants, and cacti plants. Basically, a gardener’s heaven.
Grand Concourse
The Grand Concourse is a 5.2-mile long street thoroughfare situated in the western part of the Bronx. It cuts across many neighborhoods including Norwood, Tremor, and Highbridge. In 1890, a topographical engineer and French immigrant, Louis Aloys Risse, conceived the idea to connect the borough of Manhattan with the northern part of the Bronx.
The construction began in 1894 and lasted for fifteen years. Numerous iconic landmarks can be seen along the Grand Concourse. Notable mentions are the Bronx Museum of Arts and the Loew’s Paradise Theatre.
Unique Characteristics
There are so many more perks of the Bronx, asides its momentums and landmarks.
There are a lot of bridges in the Bronx connecting it with the borough of Manhattan. The Bronx holds the oldest standing bridge in the city—the High Bridge (1843).
The Bronx is the greenest borough in New York City, having the largest park—Pelham Bay Park.
The Bronx is the motherland of hip-hop. Way before Jennifer Lopez and Cardi-B became sensations from the Bronx, DJ Kool Hercs’ style and sound broke through the industry. His original style of blending the Jamaican form of DJing with the regular American soul and funk makes him a mainstay in the entertainment world.
The Bronx has the largest collection of Art Deco and modern style of architecture ̶ on the Grand
Concourse.
